What are the most important factors that influence your decision to purchase a major piece of equipment for your boat?It seems like a simple question but I believe it’s often overlooked by many companies in their efforts to meet customer’s requirements and deliver satisfaction. What do you think? I’d like to hear from you!

Tim Walters at Engines 1 just informed me that Spencer Yachts in Wanchese, NC just commissioned a 37' Sportfish with their first Westerbeke Safe-CO gasoline genset. The new owner fished the Big Rock tournament last week and reported that the genset performed perfectly!
Ever wonder how much horsepower you need for your sailboat? A good rule of thumb to determine the correct power for your boat is as follows: Pleasure use - two horsepower per one thousand pounds of hull displacement (weight). Long range/world cruising - two and one half horsepower per one thousand pounds of hull displacement (weight). Example: Pleasure use vessel, hull displacement is 25,000 pounds - 2 horsepower times 25 equals 50 horsepower. A 50 horsepower engine should perform well. In this case, the Westerbeke 55C Four is a perfect choice! You should always consult an experienced marine diesel technician before making a final choice but this is a good start. Happy boating!
Fax machines, the World Wide Web, cell phones, GPS, wireless communication, iPods and the list goes on. All really cool stuff that makes our lives easier, more convenient and more fun! It’s instant gratification with the least amount of effort. Just as the age of electronics and communication has impacted our everyday lives, now it can impact your passion……….boating. There are some incredibly clever marine electronics available for your boat and the NMEA 2000® communications protocol brings them all together. Click here to learn more about NMEA 2000®. That’s not all…………..now it’s possible to integrate your engine(s) and generator(s) to be part of the NMEA 2000® system. Westerbeke was the first genset manufacturer to become NMEA 2000® certified (and the only at this time). In fact Westerbeke diesel gensets, known as D-NET™, are not only available with the NMEA 2000® protocol, they can actually provide power for the entire NMEA 2000® network on the vessel. Click here to learn more about Westerbeke D-NET™ Electronic Diesel Gensets. So the next time you shop for electronics, think about the possibilities and most important…………… have fun!
From my experience boating and being on the water brings families closer together and is the perfect way to relax and enjoy life. Common sense and safety is essential though. Being aware of Carbon Monoxide (CO) on boats is an important part of boating safety. CO is an odorless, colorless gas and you can not see it or smell it. When inhaled, CO reacts with the oxygen in the blood, and essentially asphyxiates blood cells. Proper engine maintenance and regular inspections by experienced and trained engine and generator mechanics is important to make sure your engine does not have a leak in the exhaust system. And remember to always follow manufacturer's instructions on proper installation and use of marine engines and generators. Check-out the WesterbekeSafeCO video to learn more about carbon monoxide and boating safety. Enjoy!
